Processing Nature

  • Tjerk Woudsma / Crossmedia Design / Enschede

‘How do the structures on your skin form? Where do the patterns in nature originate? Sometimes, rules that are elegantly simplistic lie behind the most complex patterns. These rules are generally quite abstract, and can be better understood by visualising them. You can do this, for instance, by programming, and letting your computer carry out your idea. I work principally with “Processing”, an accessible programming language that is very well-suited to artists and designers. I’m fascinated by how relatively simple math can generate such an incredibly varied and natural array of images. It reflects the amount of invisible mathematics around us. Are we living in a formula?’
